I really love this band. To be honest, I think they are one of the best new, "small" bands out from the south. To me, they have a richness to their weird punkabilly/psychobilly/whatever-it-is-abilly that I haven't heard before. Their last album, Swampblood, was a bit tame compared to the others. The two before that were top notch. It doesn't get much better in musical texture and southern gothic lyrics. If there are more bands out there like this, tell me. They are great. Who else likes them? I've seen them twice. Once they opened for Rev. Horton Heat and the second time they were the headliner. Both times were at the Handlebar. The second time probably left a bad taste in their mouth. There were about 50/60 people there but they were feeling it, to be sure. (It was July 5th and on a Wednesday. Anyone would have had a hard time getting a nice crowd, what with post-July 4th hangovers and work.) The sound mix was pretty bad, loosing JD's vocals entirely sometimes. But for rabid fans like myself, I knew every word before he sang it so it wasn't a problem. I filled in the blanks. JD Wilkes is something to see, folks. He is a front man like Birthday Party-era Nick Cave, Iggy Pop, Mick Jagger, and Johnny Rotten all in one with the twang of a sweet ol' southern boy and the growl of something much, much more evil. Good stuff. Anybody? ;D

I remember that show. After their set was over, I wasn't sure if there'd be enough people or applause to get them back for an encore. Finally I yelled, "Where's the Devil When You Need Him?" and I guess J.D. took it to heart, cuz they came back on and played it! ;D

They're such a great band and no one was there. I just think it was bad timing, really.
