What do you think about Greenville's local music scene? Comments? Ideas? Suggestions?

Not enough local artists get the support they deserve.

I can only really give my personal experience of being in a band. For several years I played in an original band that was started just to be an outlet for some of my songwriting. We had come up with a good forty-five minutes worth of stuff and at that point we were kind of like "what now?" We were able to find places to play in Columbia, Anderson, and Spartanburg, but we had no place in Greenville where we could play for people who actually knew us. We weren't a cover band, we weren't a Christian band, we weren't big enough to play at the Handlebar. After trying to find some gigs at a bunch of different places, we kind of just fizzled out and gave up. I imagine a lot of bands end up the same way.
Now, I know perfectly well that if we were "good enough" we probably would have gotten a break somewhere and built a fan base and gotten a lot more success. But we need a venue in town that is half-way professional that will let virtually anyone play, let bands suck yet learn through experience what works and what doesn't. I hope that Scott (of Gypsy G fame) and his new place will fill that void, because Gypsy G's seemed to be doing that.

Yeah, I hope the new Gypsy G's will be good. I just hope it's less sketch. Reverb could be that place too. I think they're starting to develop into that kind of venue. I'm going to interview Wendy tomorrow and we'll post an article on it soon.

There is no Greenville music scene. There is great music here but there is no central unifying element. Although its booking policy is very nice people do not go to Gypsy G's for music. Most people are there to get drunk on cheap booze and hook up. -jacob

I disagree. If there's music, there's a scene. It's the unifying element.

I support music/musicians that I like. That's going to pigeonhole the website if you're not willing to go out and support more than just those you like. There is no Greenville music scene. There is great music here but there is no central unifying element. Although its booking policy is very nice people do not go to Gypsy G's for music. Most people are there to get drunk on cheap booze and hook up. -jacob What the hell are you talking about? There's hardly anywhere to go for music since the Gypsy closed. I was there quite often to hear bands...were you there showing support? It's this douchebag elitist attitude that prevents that "central unifying element" you're looking for.

Daniel - I was only responding personally there. I personally support music I like, sorry for the lack of clarity. However, when it comes to the site and trying to help Greenville's scene, that is not the case - at all. This site is not by any means only a representation of music I like.

Hi, I am new here and live in Charlotte. I think it is tough to get people out to shows, period. But some wiser venues are looking beyond outdated models of how to succeed. The article with Wendy shows there is promise in your town. At least from an outsider's perspective.
I'd like to extend a hand down to Gville and say that if you all want to book shows in Charlotte I know at least one venue that is small but a good place to learn. And the booking dude is very easy to work with.

Just dig.... there is so much happening here, it's unbelieveable... The Work, The Professors, Lone Gunmen, Eustachian, Matt Jennings, Projekt Lotus, Black Market, The Malah, Nile, Melee... I'll fill up the whole page name dropping - but this is the thing... you have to DIG for it... But... Greenville is loaded with good music and art. Once you've keyed into that, then you can enjoy the sounds. Just find out who's playing when... if the media isn't covering it enough, start your own magazine... That's when it's gonna explode... just watch.
